When Ronald Marx answered the Last Roll Call last year, Heartland Post 1854 lost more than its first commander. It also lost its rudder and engine room. Ron not only started the Post, he was the driving force behind every activity, from Highland games, to fund raising, to organizing Christmas packages for the troops overseas, to school programs, to the Burns Dinner. He was often the first too arrive, and the last to leave. With his passing, the Post felt adrift. But we carried on. We continue to attend the only Highland Games left in Kansas, organize the Burns Dinner, and (beginning this year) support the VA Homeless Veteran Program. We continue to recruit new members, including at this year’s McConnell AFB Open House, where a good number of veterans and active duty personnel of Scottish decent were introduced to the existence of the Scottish American Military Society. Post 1854 is alive and well, and is looking forward to future growth and service.

We had a great time at the inaugural Edgewood Celtic Festival. A one-day event, but fairly well attended. Three of us manned our new Post tent, while another member manned a tent for the Welsh Society and the Celtic Community Center, and yet another represented his Clan across the way. We were shown a good deal of interest in our Society, and gave out a number of membership applications to people making serious inquiries. One of those turned in his application before closing time! We look forward to continued interest and growth, and the establishment of our new Color Guard and Honor Guard. —Thomas B. Hill, PC. basscdr@gmail.com

Holiday Greetings and Best of the New Year to one and all. It is goodbye to 2018, a year of marked accomplishment for Post events thanks to our members participation and support. If we can match or enhance our activities in 2019 we will again “stand tall”. As a start to this goal, our Annual Planning Meeting is set for 26 Jan to plan Post direction and establish an event calendar for 2019. 17-19 February is our the Post Annual Dinner Weekend in Dublin. Friday night at a local Pub, Saturday afternoon wine tour, followed by a formal dinner It is a unique opportunity for the Post to display its Scottish finery for a weekend of dining, entertainment and camaraderie. Fair winds and following Holidays,
